Buying a home with less-than-perfect credit

Just because your credit score isn’t ideal doesn’t mean you can’t finance a home. Consider these options:

  1. The FHA offers affordable financing to first-time buyers and others with less than a 20 percent down payment. Those who qualify may pay as little as 3.5 percent down.

  2. The VA, USDA and Navy Federal Credit Union are three government-related lenders that offer mortgages with as little as zero down. The VA serves veterans and family members; the USDA typically serves buyers in rural areas; and the Navy Federal Credit Union serves military personnel and their families, as well as some government employees.

  3. A parent, other relative or friend (who has good credit and is willing to take on the responsibility) can co-sign your mortgage loan.

  4. Some local and state agencies sponsor assistance programs. For more information, visit websites such as com and Neighbor Works . Org
