The real spin on ceiling fans
Since the days before air conditioning, fans have been used to keep air moving and cool people down by evaporating sweat on the body. But studies have shown that ceiling fans can accomplish much more than that.
In addition to evaporative cooling, fans also aid in convective cooling – moving warm, humid air away and replacing it with drier, cooler air. That allows even more water to evaporate from the skin.
Comfort is a mix of temperature, humidity and air movement. If the air is too humid, then a fan is not going to cool you because there is less evaporation.
When it comes to fans, it seems bigger is better. Also, a slower-turning fan is more effective and can cool you while saving on power costs. The combination of a smart fan and a smart thermostat will offer the most energy efficiency.
If a ceiling fan makes you feel cooler, then you might be inclined to raise the setting on your thermostat. Raising your thermostat one degree can save you 3-5 percent on energy costs. The opposite is also true. By reversing the ceiling fan, you can blow warm air down and feel warmer without turning up your thermostat. I hope this has helped you in a small way.
